| How to use the Early
Years Foundation Stage Planning Pack in your setting.
Medium Term Planning This planning is for a main focus or theme which shows the objectives in all six curriculum areas – Personal Social and Emotional development, Communication Language and Literacy, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Physical Education, Problem solving, Reasoning and Numeracy (Maths) and Creative Development. This main theme can last for up to 6 weeks or more but depends on the children's interest. There may also be more emphasis on a particular curriculum area, so it is important to observe the children and pick up their interests. For the purposes of the new Early Years Foundation Stage you can look in the Guidance and identify any particular objectives which are relevant to the development stages of the group and add these to the sheet if necessary. Enhancements It is useful to make a display which helps staff, parents, and children to explore the main focus of the medium term plan. You can also set up an interactive display and have a question for the day. Children and families can also be invited to bring in objects to add to the display or to show at circle time. Don't forget to add relevant books and photographs. In the areas of provision you can adapt/change the resources in order to focus on the theme and change the role play area – for example, in winter change it into an igloo with white sheets, plastic icicles etc., with scarves, wellies and woolly hats to wear. If you are looking at growing or plants in the Spring or Summer you can change the role play area into a garden centre, giving lots of opportunities for maths and language development. Discuss with the children and ask them for ideas to give them ownership of the areas. Focus Activities This planning sheet shows the main areas of learning which the activity will support. Intended learning opportunities are the objectives which you want the children to achieve through the activity. This can be when the children are learning independently but in an enhanced area or through an adult directed activity. The important thing is to interact with the children, extend their learning and challenge their thinking by discussion and exploration. Look at the key questions which you can use during this process and emphasis key vocabulary. Make observations which can be general
or observations on individual children for their profiles. This will help
you to evaluate the activity and you can then make decisions about how
the activity could be improved, developed or further enhanced. Ask the
children what they think. Gather evidence in the form of observations,
photographs and notes from meetings at the end of a theme/focus.
